Is it Possible to Heal Prolapse Without Surgery?

Prolapse Mini Series

Part One: Understanding Prolapse Symptoms & Causes

Part Two: Is it Possible to Heal Prolapse Without Surgery?

Prolapse is one of the most common core health topics I get asked about. This condition involves the descent of pelvic organs—such as the bladder, uterus, or bowel—into or out of the vaginal vault, leading to various symptoms and complications. Despite common misconceptions, prolapse can often be treated and even healed naturally without resorting to surgery.

In part one of this mini series, we talked about what prolapse is and prolapse symptoms and causes. In part two, we’ll explore how to treat and heal prolapse naturally without surgery.

Traditional Prolapse Treatment

One of the most pervasive myths in pelvic health western medicine is the belief that "there is nothing you can do to fix prolapse and your only option is surgery." This is entirely incorrect and deeply troubling. Through my years of experience working with an incredible urogynecologist, I've discovered a variety of non-surgical techniques that are truly effective at healing prolapse. The key lies in understanding the importance of organ positioning and the role of core muscle function in maintaining organ position.

In Western medicine, prolapse is typically addressed surgically. The conventional belief is that prolapse cannot be corrected without surgery. However, this perspective is incomplete. Surgery often only repositions the organs without addressing the underlying issue of core muscle dysfunction. Without proper core muscle retraining post-surgery, the continued pressures that caused the prolapse in the first place will remain and can lead to recurrence which in turn can lead to additional surgical interventions. So ultimately, surgery isn’t always the right answer and it certainly isn’t the only answer.

Nonsurgical Treatment for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

The Core Recovery Method® is a holistic, doctor-formulated physical therapy protocol designed specifically to treat prolapse naturally. This comprehensive program focuses on the permanent realignment and optimization of pelvic organ positioning without the need for surgery.

Here's how it works:

  1. Self Abdominal Massage: This technique helps to release tension in the abdominal muscles that is causing increased pressure in the abdomen. When this dysfunctional abdominal muscle tension is relieved, the muscles can more easily perform their job of properly managing pressure in the abdomen. This massage also lifts and centers the organs and re-aligns them into their best position. Self abdominal massage is the "passive" strategy used to lift and realign the pelvic organs.
  2. Hypopressive Training: Central to the The Core Recovery Method®, this technique uses specific postures and breathing patterns to activate deep core muscles, lift the pelvic organs, decompress the spine, and tighten the abdominal and pelvic fascia. Hypopressive training not only lifts the organs but also strengthens the internal fascia to maintain this lift. It improves bowel and bladder function, rehabilitates the pelvic floor muscles, and enhances overall core strength. Hypopressive training is the "active" strategy used to lift the organs and strengthen the core muscles and fascia to keep them lifted.
  3. Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation: Strengthening the pelvic floor is crucial in supporting your pelvic organs. By implementing specific pelvic floor exercises that are designed for prolapse, you can begin to heal naturally and prevent prolapse recurrence. The pelvic floor exercises used in The Core Recovery Method® are not the typical kegels. They are exercises specifically designed to trigger reflexive activation of your pelvic floor muscles through breathwork and posture, which allows them to have a long lasting effect.
  4. Postural Training: Proper posture is essential in managing intra-abdominal pressure, optimizing organ position and supporting core stability. Poor posture leads to chronically increased abdominal and pelvic pressure, and will lead to lowering of the pelvic organs. So using an exercise protocol that trains your core to have the endurance to maintain ideal posture is critical in healing prolapse.
  5. Breath Work: The diaphragm is the main modulator of the pressure in the abdomen and pelvis. Therefore breath work that targets diaphragm mobility, control and strength is critical in training the core to properly manage pressure in the abdomen and support the pelvic organs. Breath work is also the way we access the involuntary muscle fibers of the core muscles, which are the ones that support the organs and keep them in place throughout your day. Training breathing patterns that create a lift to the pelvic organs on inhale and exhale is the key to healing prolapse.

Why Choose The Core Recovery Method®?

The Core Recovery Method® was developed after years of clinical experience in a urogynecology practice, helping women heal and recover from prolapse. Witnessing the incredible results women achieved using these physical therapy techniques inspired me to create this method and offer it to a broader audience through an online program. The Core Recovery Method® Online Program provides a safe, effective, and non-surgical pathway to healing prolapse, helping women feel confident and comfortable in their bodies again.

Whether you are dealing with prolapse for the first time, have lived with it for years, or have undergone prolapse surgery and want to prevent another, The Core Recovery Method® offers a powerful solution. By focusing on natural healing and the importance of core muscle function, this program helps you regain control over your body and optimize your pelvic health.

The Core Recovery Method® in Action

We’ve talked about what we cover inside the program, but here’s what that protocol actually looks like in your day-to-day life.

  • Improving Bladder and Bowel Hygiene: Focusing on proper hydration, avoiding constipation, and not straining during elimination will prevent prolapse from worsening. Using a squatty potty to reduce pelvic pressure during elimination, and appropriately responding to the urge to urinate will help manage abdominal pressure and help heal prolapse.
  • Correct Posture and Breathing: Maintaining a long waist and open ribs, and breathing into the rib cage rather than the belly will allow your pelvic organs to stay lifted. Slow, full-lung capacity breathing combined with elongating the spine during exhalation reflexively activates the core muscles and supports the pelvic organs.
  • Avoid High-Pressure Activities: Activities like running, jumping, heavy lifting, HIIT workouts, and certain abdominal exercises can increase intra-abdominal pressure, exacerbating prolapse. Avoiding these activities until your core strength is restored will be an important aspect in healing prolapse.
  • Hypopressive Training: This transformative technique lifts the pelvic organs, decompresses the spine, and reflexively strengthens the core muscles. It is the safest and most effective method for healing prolapse and enhancing overall core function. A consistent hypopressive training practice does wonders for prolapse.
